Hoopeston
The city of Hoopeston was founded in 1871 at the intersection of the Lafayette, Bloomington, and Western, and Chicago, Danville, and Vincennes railroads, and had a population of 5,351 as of the 2000 census. Hoopeston is a small community approximately 15 miles north of Danville, the county seat.
Agriculture has been the major industry in the Hoopeston area for some time, and the city hosts the annual Sweetcorn Festival, and Miss National Sweetheart Pageant around Labor Day. Hoopeston touts itself as the "Sweetcorn Capital of the World".
Hoopeston is located approximately 100 miles south of Chicago, 40 miles northeast of Champaign-Urbana (home to the University of Illinois), and 100 miles west of Indianapolis, Indiana. Illinois Route 1 provides access to Danville to the south. Hoopeston has a grade school, middle school, and high school.
